Electric stove burner not working

The surface element switch sends voltage to the surface element coil. If the switch is defective, the surface element will not work. If there is another element of the same size on the stove, try switching the elements. If the surface element still doesn’t work, the surface element switch is likely defective. The surface element switch cannot be tested or repaired—if you suspect the switch is defective, replace it. 

Electric stove burner won't turn off

The surface element switch sends voltage to the surface element coil. Sometimes, when the surface element switch fails, the electrical contacts inside the switch fuse together, causing the switch to send continuous voltage to the surface element. If the surface element switch is defective, replace it.

Range display board not working

If some of the range's main display is still working, but the surface element "on" indicator light does not, it's likely a surface element switch is defective. You can use a multimeter to test the surface element switch for electrial continuity to help determine if the part is faulty.

Range making a loud noise

When a surface element switch shorts out there will be a popping noise, and then the switch will stop working. Check for a shorted surface element before replacing the switch.

Stove turns off on its own

A stovetop surface element turning off on its own could be caused by a faulty surface element switch. Try turning the element switch all the way off then back on to a different heat setting. If the surface element begins working again, the switch is likely defective and should be replaced.

Electric stove burner temperature is erratic

The surface element switch sends voltage to the surface element coil. If the switch is defective, the surface element may only receive intermittent voltage resulting in erratic temperature changes. If there is another element of the same size on the stove, try switching the elements. If the surface element still only works intermittently, the surface element switch is likely defective. The surface element switch cannot be tested or repaired—if you suspect the switch is defective, replace it.
