The oven control board has relays that send voltage to the bake and broil circuits according to the user settings and sensor input. If the control board is defective, it may not send voltage to the heating components. However, this is rarely the case. Before replacing the control board, first test all of the heating components. If you determine that all of the heating components are working properly, replace the oven control board. Since it’s not easy to test the oven control board, you will have to replace the control board if you suspect it is defective.

Oven doesn't bake evenly

The oven control board works in conjunction with the oven sensor to regulate the temperature. The sensor regulates the oven temperature by varying its resistance to electrical current as the oven temperature varies. As the oven temperature rises, the oven sensor creates greater resistance. If the sensor gives the wrong amount of resistance, the oven may not bake evenly. Or if the oven control board does not read the sensor resistance correctly the oven temperature can be inaccurate. On some models, you can recalibrate the oven control up to 35 degrees Fahrenheit higher or lower. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to recalibrate the oven control.

If the range's oven burners keep sparking all the time and the spark igniter appears to be in good condition, it's likely the oven control board is not sensing that the burner has lit and is continuing to send voltage to the sparker. Since control boards are difficult to test, you should confirm other more likely defective components are all working properly before considering a control board replacement.

The oven control board is used to send voltage to nearly all of the oven's electrical components including the fan. If the control board is defective, it may be unable to send voltage to the fan, although this is not a common problem. You can use a multimeter to determine if power is reaching the fan or blower assembly. If power is not reaching the fan or blower assembly when tested with a multimeter, then the control board is likely defective and will need to be replaced.

Oven light not turning off

The oven light often gets its power from the oven control board. If the control board is shorted the light can stay on. If the light switch or door switch is in the off position, but the light stays on, the control board has likely shorted and will need to be replaced. 

Oven meat thermometer not working

When the probe is plugged into the jack, the oven control board monitors the food temperature from the probe. If the temperature probe and jack are good but the control board is not responding, the control board is likely bad.

Range display board not working

The oven control board displays the time, temperature, and settings for the range. If the oven control board has power to it but the display is dead, missing digits or dim, it will need to be replaced.

Range making a loud noise

If the gas is not lighting correctly, it can build up and flash, causing a small boom noise in the oven. This can potentially be caused by a defective oven control board. However, control boards are often misdiagnosed—before replacing the control board, first check more commonly defective parts. If you have determined that all of the other components are working properly, replace the control board.

To help determine this, you can test for voltage reaching the door lock motor. If no voltage is reaching the motor, it's likely the control board is faulty and requires replacement.

The oven control board displays the time, temperature, and settings for the wall oven. If the oven control board has power to it but the display is dead, missing digits or dim, it will need to be replaced.
