Dryer won't start

A dryer's idler assembly puts tension on the belt to rotate the drum. If the idler pulley is worn out or damaged, the belt can break or fall off and actuate a belt switch which can prevent the dryer from starting. If this is the case, the idler assembly will need to be replaced.

Dryer stopped spinning

The dryer's idler assembly puts tension on the drive belt so the belt can rotate the drum during operation. A defective idler assembly can cause the dryer drum to stop spinning. Inspect the idler pulley and make sure it spins freely on the shaft. If the idler pulley is stuck, worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drum drive belt in addition to replacing the idler assembly.

Dryer drum not turning

Inspect the idler pulley for the dryer drum belt and make sure it spins freely on the shaft. If the idler pulley is stuck, worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drum drive belt in addition to replacing the idler pulley assembly.

Dryer makes noise

Inspect the idler assembly for signs of wear. If the idler assembly is worn or damaged, we recommend replacing the drive belt in addition to replacing the idler assembly.

Dryer has a burning smell

The idler pulley assembly keeps tension on the belt to prevent it from slipping. If the idler wheel is damaged or stops turning, the belt can slip on the drive pulley, producing a burning smell. If your idler pulley assembly is damaged or doesn't turn, you should replace it. Replacing the drive belt is also recommended.

Dryer vibrating or shaking

A worn or stuck idler assembly may be unable to smoothly allow the drive belt to rotate the drum efficiently, resulting in the appliance vibrating or shaking. Inspect the idler assembly for any wear or damage and confirm the pulley rotates freely. If the assembly shows signs of damage or the pulley doesn't turn easily the idler assembly should be replaced.
