Dishwasher not cleaning

Some dishwashers use a heating element to heat the dishwasher during  both the washing and drying cycles. If the heating element has failed, the dishwasher may not clean the dishes properly. To determine if the heating element has burned out, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it.

Dishwasher lights flashing or blinking

The heating element heats up the water to operating temperature. If the water doesn’t reach the proper temperature after a set amount of time, a light on the control panel might start flashing. To determine if the heating element has burned out, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it.

Dishwasher leaking

If the seals or gaskets surrounding the heating element terminals have deteriorated water can leak through the holes the terminals are inserted through. Inspect the seals for damage and replace the heating element assembly if necessary.

Dishwasher not drying dishes

Some dishwashers use a heating element to heat the dishwasher during the drying cycle. If the heating element has failed, the dishwasher won't dry dishes properly. To determine if the heating element has burned out, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it. Note that some dishwasher heating elements have a resettable fuse that can trip, preventing voltage from reaching the element to heat it. Dishwasher has a burning smell

The heating element may be shorted, causing a burning smell. In most cases when the element shorts out, it will have blisters or raised sections on it; in other cases a shorted element will break in half. To determine if the heating element has burned out, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it.

Dishwasher stops mid-cycle

Some dishwashers use a heating element to heat the dishwasher during the drying cycle as well as heat the water during a wash cycle. If the heating element burns out, the dishwasher may stop mid-cycle. To determine if the heating element has burned out, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the heating element does not have continuity, replace it. Note that some dishwasher heating elements have a resettable fuse that can trip, preventing voltage from reaching the element and causing the dishwasher to stop mid-cycle. Dishwasher overheating

A shorted heating element may be raising the temperature of the water beyond what is normal for proper operation and causing the dishwasher to overheat. You can use a multimeter to test the heating element for a short to help determine if the component should be replaced.
