Dryer won't start

Dryer drive belt. This is the most common GE/Hotpoint dryer belt. 87" long and 1/4" wide. 4 ridges.The drive belt dries out over time. If the dryer belt cracks or breaks, the dryer drum will not be able to turn. If the dryer motor is running, but the drum won't rotate, the belt has likely broken.

On most dryers, when the dryer belt breaks, the motor will still run, but the drum will not turn. However, some dryers have a switch that shuts off power to the dryer if the drive belt is broken. Check the dryer belt to determine if it is broken. If the belt is broken, replace it.

Dryer stopped spinning

The drive belt is a very long, slender belt that wraps all the way around the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor pulley. Over time, the belt can break from normal use. If the belt is broken, the dryer won’t turn. To quickly determine if the belt is broken, reach into the dryer and turn the drum by hand. If the drum spins very easily, the belt is likely broken. Next, inspect the belt to confirm that it is broken. If the belt is broken, replace it.

Dryer makes noise

Over time, the drive belt can become frayed or otherwise damaged. If the drive belt is frayed or damaged, the dryer will be noisy as it turns. Inspect the drive belt for signs of wear. If the drive belt is worn, replace it.

Inspect the drive belt to determine if it is broken or if it is loose on the pulleys. If the drive belt is broken or loose, replace it.

Washer is making loud noise

The drive belt might be defective. Over time, the drive belt can dry or burn out and starts to crack. Eventually, a piece of the belt can break off, causing the belt to make a loud noise whenever the motor is running. To determine if the drive belt is broken, inspect the drive belt. If the drive belt is broken or damaged, replace it.

Washer won't agitate

Washer won't drain

If the drive belt is loose or broken, it will not be able to spin the tub fast enough to drain the water. Inspect the drive belt to determine if it is broken or if it is loose on the pulleys. If the drive belt is broken or loose, replace it.

Washer won't start

On some washers, a drive belt is used to rotate the tub during the agitation and spin cycles. If the control detects that the drive belt is loose or broken, the washer may not be allowed to start. Inspect the drive belt to determine if it is broken or if it is loose on the pulleys. If the drive belt is broken or loose, replace it.

Dryer has a burning smell

A drive belt that is stretched, worn or frayed can slip producing a burning smell. If the belt is damaged also check that the drum and idler pulley turn freely.

If the drive belt is worn or frayed it can slip on the pulley causing friction and a burning smell. Also check the components the belt is turning to make sure they turn freely. A stuck water pump or idler pulley can create enough friction to cause the belt to burn.

A worn or damaged drive belt may be unable to rotate the dryer drum efficiently, resulting in the appliance vibrating or shaking. Inspect the belt for any breaks, fraying, or sections that are worn down or too smooth and replace if required.
