Microwave not working

Since the control board controls the voltage being sent to all of the microwave's components, a defective board could be responsible for a microwave not working. However, this is rarely the case. Control boards are often misdiagnosed—check all of the more commonly defective parts. If you have determined that all of the other components are working properly, replace the control board.

Microwave light bulb not working

A microwave light bulb not working could be caused by a defective control board, although this is rarely the case. Before replacing the control board, check the light bulbs, sockets, and wiring. If these parts seem to be working properly, test the control board with a multimeter to determine if it sending the correct voltage to the light bulb socket. If the control board is not sending enough voltage to the light bulb socket, replace the control board.

Microwave shuts off after a few seconds

Control boards are often misdiagnosed—before replacing the control board, first check more commonly defective parts, particularly the door switches. If all of the other components are working properly, replace the control board.

Microwave turntable not turning

The control might be defective. However, the turntable motor is much more likely to be at fault. First, check the incoming power to the turntable motor. If the turntable motor is not getting power, the main control board may be at fault.

Microwave buttons not working

To determine if the control board is defective, try pressing each of the buttons on the control panel. If none of the buttons are responding correctly, it is possible that the control board is defective.

Microwave display not working

	Since the control board is a part of the digital display, a defective board could be responsible for a microwave display not working, if the control board has power to it but the display is not working replace the control board.

Microwave turns on by itself

The control board has relays that send power to several components to make the microwave work. If one or more of the relays or triacs short out, some of the components can start running when the microwave is not in use. While you can often replace just the control board, some microwave models sell control panels as an assembly with both the touchpad and control board included.

Microwave is sparking or arcing

If the microwave is sparking or arcing in the cabinet area, and not in the oven cavity, you will likely see smoke or there will be a burning smell. The appliance's control board is one of the components that could be damaged and causing the sparking or arcing, although this is rarely the case. Inspect the control board for burn marks or damage and replace if necessary, although you should confirm that other more likely defective components are functioning properly first.

Microwave door not opening/closing properly

For microwaves that have a door lock feature, a malfunctioning control board may prevent the door from opening. Inspect the board for any burn marks or damage and replace the component if required.

Microwave exhaust fan not working

If the exhaust fan indicator comes on when the fan button is pressed on the control panel, but you've determined that power is not reaching the fan motor, then it's likely the control board is defective and should be replaced.

Microwave producing a burning smell

The control board may have a burnt component. Inspect the control board for burnt or melted components. If you find burnt components replace the control board. (Caution: The microwave oven can store thousands of volts of electricity in its high voltage capacitor, even after the microwave oven has been unplugged. Due to the potential for electric shock, it is extremely dangerous to replace the electronic components in a microwave. Only a licensed technician should replace the main control board.)

Microwave won't turn off
