Description

This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the valve cover on Kohler small engines, commonly found on Toro, Exmark, and John Deere riding lawn mowers, riding tractors, zero-turn radius mowers, and commercial walk-behind mowers. The most common reasons for replacing the valve cover are when the breather in the cover becomes clogged or damaged, causing air to not reach the valves and making the engine not run smoothly or at all.

Step By Step Instructions

Before you begin this repair, make sure the engine has cooled.

Remove the wire and boot from each spark plug, then disconnect the cables from the battery (black first, then red if applicable).

To the valve you're replacing, remove the screws to release the brackets holding the oil breather in place and pull the breather out of the valve cover.

Now use a socket to remove the bolt securing the old valve cover and pull the cover off.

Be aware, some engine oil may spill out.

Install the new valve cover by first inserting the provided O-ring into the valve cover groove (if applicable).

Insert the grommet.

Now align the new valve cover on the cylinder head and secure it with the provided bolts (if applicable).

Aligned the rear retaining bracket and reinsert the oil breather into the cover, then position and secure the front retaining bracket with the screws.

With the new valve cover in place, you can now reconnect the battery cables (red first, then black).

Finally, reattach the wire end boot to each spark plug.
