This video provides step-by-step repair instructions for replacing the drive gear on a KitchenAid trash compactor. The most common reason for replacing the drive gear is when the trash compactor is making loud noise.

To replace the drive gear components in your trash compactor, you will need to uninstall the appliance from the cabinet.

Once the compactor is uninstalled, unplug the power cord.

Next, depress the foot pedal pull the container drawer assembly forward and lift it off of the track.

Next, remove the quarter inch hex-head screws securing the mounting brackets and top panel.

Slide the top panel back and lift it off.

Now, carefully set the compactor on its side.

Remove the screws securing the bottom panel and pull the panel off.

Now carefully rotate the large drive gear counter-clockwise to disengage the ram from the power screws.

Return the compactor to its upright position.

Use tape to hold the directional switch lever away from the ram.

Now lift the ram out.

Pull out the power screw shields.

You can now remove the old ram stops and washers.

Install the new ram stops by first sliding the provided washers onto the power screws.

Now slide on the new stops.

Apply some grease to the top and bottom of each stop.

Replace the shields.

Carefully reposition the ram, making sure the stop bracket is facing the front.

Set the compactor back on its side.

Use a 3/8th inch socket to loosen the motor assembly mounting screws to allow the motor assembly to slide forward and release tension on the chain.

Remove the retaining clip securing the large drive gear and pull off the gear.

Use a hammer and punch to knock out the roll pin securing the small drive gear.

Pull the gear off.

Install the new small drive gear by sliding it onto the motor shaft.

Secure it with the provided roll pin.

Make sure the washer is in place on the gear shaft then align the chain on the sprocket of the new large drive gear.

Slide the new gear onto the shaft and secure it with the retaining clip.

Now remove the screw securing the motor cover and pull off the cover.

You can now pull the motor assembly back to put tension on the chain so the chain moves no more than 3/8th of an inch.

Tighten the motor assembly mounting screws.

Rotate the large drive gear clockwise to re-engage the ram with the power screws.

Apply some grease to the new gears.

Reposition the motor cover and secure it with the screw.

Replace the bottom panel and reinstall the screws.

Return the compactor to its upright position and remove the tape securing the directional switch lever.

Replace the top panel.

Align the mounting brackets and replace all of the screws.

Reposition the container drawer assembly on the track and push it into place.

With the repair completed, plug the power cord back in and reinstall the trash compactor in the cabinet.
