The temperature sensor monitors the refrigerator temperature and sends the temperature reading to the control board. The control board regulates power to the compressor and evaporator fan based on the sensor readings. If the sensor is defective, the compressor and evaporator fan may not run when necessary. As a result, the refrigerator will not be cold enough. To determine if the temperature sensor is defective, test it with a multimeter. The sensor resistance should change in conjunction with the refrigerator temperature. If the sensor resistance does not change, or the sensor does not have electrical continuity, replace the component.

Refrigerator not defrosting

A temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils. If the coils are below a set temperature, the sensor will alert the defrost control to allow power to flow to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle. In the defrost cycle, the defrost heater melts away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the temperature sensor is defective, the defrost control will not be alerted to allow voltage to be sent to the defrost heater.

Refrigerator is noisy or loud

If the temperature sensor on the evaporator coil is defective, the control board will not sense if the coil has been properly defrosted. This could result in enough frost or ice building up near the evaporator fan blade to create a noise when the fan is spinning. The sensor can be tested with a multimeter to determine if it is functioning properly when the air temperature changes.

Refrigerator defrost drain clogged

A temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the evaporator coils. If the coils are below a set temperature, the sensor will alert the defrost control to allow power to flow to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle. The temperature sensor monitors the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer compartments and sends the temperature reading to the control board. If the sensor is defective, the freezer temperature might become too cold and result in the condensation dripping off the evaporator to freeze up in the defrost drain. This can lead to ice forming on the bottom of the freezer which can then result in water leaking out onto the floor during a defrost cycle. This is not a common problem so other possible causes of the water leak should be eliminated before considering a temperature sensor replacement.

Refrigerator freezing food

The temperature sensor monitors the refrigerator temperature and signals the control board to direct voltage to the compressor, evaporator fan motor, and condenser fan motor (if applicable) to restart the cooling system when necessary. If the temperature sensor is not working properly, it may cause the refrigerant system to run longer than necessary. As a result, the refrigerator will be too cold. You can often use a multimeter to test the sensor for changes in resistance as the sensor is heated up or cooled down. If the component shows no changes in resistance, the sensor is faulty and should be replaced.

Manual-defrost refrigerator/freezers: Manual defrost refrigerator/freezers require very little maintenance. When frost has accumulated on the inside walls of the freezer to a thickness of ½ inch or so, remove the food from the refrigerator/freezer, turn off the thermostat or unplug the unit, and allow all of the frost to melt. Once the frost has melted completely, turn the unit back on, wait for it to reach its operating temperature, and restock it with food. Self-defrosting refrigerator/freezers You don't need to manually defrost your self-defrosting refrigerator/freezer. Every 6 to 8 hours, it heats up its cooling coils slightly and melts any frost accumulation on the coils. The resulting water drains into a shallow pan at the bottom of the refrigerator/freezer. There's no need to empty the pan. The water in it will evaporate. But it may begin to smell bad over time. You may be able to remove it for periodic cleaning by detaching the lower grill and sliding the pan out the front of the refrigerator/freezer. Note... When mold grows in the drain pan, it is sometimes considered to be a health concern. If your drain pan is removable, and if you're sensitive to mold, consider cleaning the drain pan periodically. Under your refrigerator/freezer is a set of coils and a cooling fan that you need to clean at least once a year. The coils may look like a grate or like a wide radiator. Unplug the refrigerator/freezer and use a Refrigerator Condenser Brush (available in the parts section of our website), and your vacuum cleaner to clean any lint, pet hair, and so on from the coils.
