Freezer not freezing

Freezer control board. If the freezer does not run, the freezer control may be defective.

Control boards are often misdiagnosed—before replacing the control board, first check more commonly defective parts. If you have determined that all of the other components are working properly, replace the main control board.

Freezer not working, clicking sound

If a freezer is not working, but you're hearing a clicking sound, you should confirm that power is getting to the compressor. If no power is reaching the compressor, or the power to the compressor is intermittent, it's likely the main control board is defective. However, control boards are often misdiagnosed—before replacing the control board, first check more commonly defective parts. If you have determined that all of the other components are working properly, replace the main control board.

Freezer runs all the time

Freezer defrost drain frozen

A frozen freezer defrost drain can be caused by the freezer temperature being too cold. If the temperature is significantly below 0° Fahrenheit and the freezer's thermistor shows appropriate resistance changes when tested with a multimeter, it's possible the main control board is faulty and sending continuous voltage to the compressor. You can inspect the board for signs of burning or a shorted component and replace if necessary.

Freezer buttons not working

The main control board sends power to the freezer components. If the control board has power to it but the display is dead or the buttons are not responding, the control board is likey bad and will need to be replaced. 

Freezer not Defrosting/Ice Buildup

The main control board regulates the power supplied to all of the freezer components, including the defrost system. If the main control board is defective, it may stop sending voltage to the defrost system. Control boards are frequently misdiagnosed—before replacing the main control, first test all of the defrost system components. If none of the defrost system components are defective, consider replacing the main control board.

The freezer's main control board is usually located on the rear panel of the appliance. If the board shorts out or is damaged by a power surge, it can produce a electric burning smell. Inspect the main control board for any burn marks and replace if necessary.
