Oven light is out

Many oven lights are controlled by a door switch that is activated when the door is opened or closed. To determine if the switch is defective, use a multimeter to test it for electrical continuity when actuated. If the door switch does test appropriately for continuity, replace it.

Oven not self-cleaning

A defective door switch may prevent the oven door from locking. The door switch is often part of the circuit that causes the oven door to lock during the self-cleaning cycle. If the oven door is unable to lock, the self-cleaning cycle will not start. To determine whether the door switch is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the door switch does not have continuity, replace it.

Microwave not heating

Most microwaves have three or four door switches. When the microwave door closes, the door switches actuate in sequence to ensure that the door is closed properly. If any of the door switches fails, the microwave will not start or heat. To determine if any of the door switches are defective, use a multimeter to test each of the switches for continuity. If none of the microwave buttons are working, you should use a multimeter to test the door switches for electrical continuity. If one of more of the switches test negative for continuity, the switch or switches should be replaced.

Microwave turns on by itself

A microwave that turns on by itself can be caused by a malfunctioning door switch. You can use a multimeter to test the door switches to determine if they are functioning appropriately and replace if necessary.

Microwave is sparking or arcing

If the microwave is sparking or arcing in the cabinet area, and not in the oven cavity, you will likely see smoke or there will be a burning smell. One of the appliance's door switches could have shorted and is causing the sparking or arcing. You should inspect each door switch for burn marks or damage and test the components with a multimeter to determine if any the door switches are malfunctioning.

Microwave exhaust fan not working

Oven light not turning off

On some models, the door switch controls when the oven light is turned on and off. If the door switch has shorted the light may stay on. You can test the switch for continuity with a multimeter. If the switch shows continuity even in the off position, the switch has shorted and will need to be replaced.

Oven meat thermometer not working

Some oven meat thermometers will not function properly unless the oven door is closed which activates a door switch to alert the control board that the door is closed. If the door switch is defective, the oven meat thermometer may not work. To determine if the switch is defective, use a multimeter to test it for electrical continuity when actuated. If the door switch does test appropriately for continuity, replace it.

Oven door won't unlock/locks intermittently

A defective door switch may prevent the oven door from unlocking or only locking intermittently. If you can't hear the door lock motor running when the self-clean button is pressed, use a multimeter to test the door switch for electrical continuity. If the door switch does not test positive for continuity when the plunger is pressed, the component should be replaced.
