Refrigerator not cooling

The condenser fan motor draws air though the condenser coils and over the compressor. If the condenser fan motor is not working properly, the refrigerator won’t cool properly.  To determine if the fan motor is defective, first check the fan blade for obstructions. Next, try turning the fan motor blade by hand. If the blade does not spin freely, replace the condenser fan motor. If no obstructions are present and the fan blade spins freely, use a multimeter to test the fan motor for continuity. If the condenser fan motor does not have continuity, replace it.

Refrigerator is noisy or loud

There might be something caught in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor bearings might be defective. The condenser fan motor is usually located underneath the refrigerator near the back. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and remove the rear access panel to access it.

Refrigerator runs constantly

If the refrigerator runs constantly  there might be something caught in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor might be defective. The condenser fan motor draws air over the condenser coils to cool them. The condenser fan motor is located underneath the refrigerator near the back. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and remove the access panel to access it.

Freezer not freezing

The condenser fan motor draws air though the condenser and over the condenser coils. If the condenser fan motor is not working properly, it won’t draw air through the condenser, causing the refrigerator not to cool. If the condenser fan motor is not running, check the fan blades for obstructions. Next, ensure that the blades spin freely.  If the fan blades do not spin freely, the fan motor bearings are worn out, and the fan motor should be replaced. If no obstructions are present, and the fan blades spin freely, use a multimeter to test the fan motor for continuity. If the condenser fan motor does not have continuity, replace it.

Freezer runs all the time

If the burning smell appears to be coming from the exterior of the refrigerator, it's possible the condenser fan motor is wearing out or overheating. You should inspect the component for any burn marks, especially near the wire connection points, and use a multimeter to test the motor for electrical continuity to help determine if the component has burned out.

Freezer cabinet is hot on the outside

The condenser fan motor cools the condenser coils and compressor when it’s running. A defective fan motor that doesn't work will result in the condenser coil, compressor, and any tubing in the cabinet walls to become very hot. Try rotating the fan blades by hand. If the blades don't turn easily, the motor has seized and will need to be replaced. You can also use a multimeter to test the fan motor for electrical continuity. If the motor tests negative for continuity, you'll know the component has failed.

Freezer is noisy or loud

The condenser fan motor is typically located near the rear of the freezer at the bottom. If the motor bearings are wearing out, the motor will produce a grinding sound. Try turning the condenser motor's fan blades by hand. If the blades do not turn freely, it's likely the motor bearings are worn out and the motor will need to be replaced.

An obstructed or aging condenser fan motor can produce a burning smell. Clear any obstruction and inspect the motor for visible signs of damage and replace if necessary.

Refrigerator Isn’t Defrosting — Refrigerator Troubleshooting

This free troubleshooting video shows quick maintenance tips including cleaning the door gaskets, cleaning the condenser coils, and using a deodorizer for keeping your refrigerator working safely and efficiently. Manual-defrost refrigerator/freezers: Manual defrost refrigerator/freezers require very little maintenance. When frost has accumulated on the inside walls of the freezer to a thickness of ½ inch or so, remove the food from the refrigerator/freezer, turn off the thermostat or unplug the unit, and allow all of the frost to melt. Once the frost has melted completely, turn the unit back on, wait for it to reach its operating temperature, and restock it with food. Self-defrosting refrigerator/freezers You don't need to manually defrost your self-defrosting refrigerator/freezer. Every 6 to 8 hours, it heats up its cooling coils slightly and melts any frost accumulation on the coils. The resulting water drains into a shallow pan at the bottom of the refrigerator/freezer. There's no need to empty the pan. The water in it will evaporate. But it may begin to smell bad over time. You may be able to remove it for periodic cleaning by detaching the lower grill and sliding the pan out the front of the refrigerator/freezer. Note... When mold grows in the drain pan, it is sometimes considered to be a health concern. If your drain pan is removable, and if you're sensitive to mold, consider cleaning the drain pan periodically. Under your refrigerator/freezer is a set of coils and a cooling fan that you need to clean at least once a year. The coils may look like a grate or like a wide radiator. Unplug the refrigerator/freezer and use a Refrigerator Condenser Brush (available in the parts section of our website), and your vacuum cleaner to clean any lint, pet hair, and so on from the coils.
